San Juan

San Juan is the capital and largest city in Puerto Rico, located in the northeastern part of the island. The city is named after Saint John the Baptist (Spanish: San Juan Bautista). The latest census estimates place the city's population at 433,733, making it the 42nd-largest city under the jurisdiction of the United States. It is also the oldest European settlement in United States territory.

San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521 and is the oldest city in Puerto Rico. Today, San Juan serves as Puerto Rico's most important seaport, as well as the main manufacturing, financial, cultural, and tourist center of the island. The population of the metropolitan area, including San Juan and the municipalities of Bayamon, Guaynabo, Cataño, Canovanas, Caguas, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Carolina and Trujillo Alto is about 2 million inhabitants, hence about half the population of Puerto Rico now live in this area. The main airports serving the city are Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, located in Carolina and Fernando Ribas Dominicci Airport located in the Isla Grande district of the Municipality of San Juan.

Cibuco Historical Center Of Corozal (In-Transit Only)

Travel to the small town of Corozal in Puerto Rico's mountains, visit a historical center and tour an old sugar plantation.

Board your air-conditioned transportation for the approximately 45-minute drive to Corozal in the mountains. Along the way your guide points out sights of interest and explains how the town is named after the "corozo" palms common to the area. Enjoy a guided tour of the Cibuco Historical Center. Explore the Río Camuy Cave Park which is part of this hemisphere's most impressive subterranean cave network, savor a local lunch, and then discover the Arecibo Observatory which is world famous for its search for extra-terrestrial life.

A guided horseback trail ride concludes with a ride on a tropical beach.

Follow the guide down dirt paths that pass through fields and occasionally by a golf course to a palm tree lined beach. Explore the tropical foothills of El Yunque on a state-of-the-art ATV built for two.

Board your air-conditioned transportation for the approximately 45-minute ride to the ranch. Upon arrival an orientation will be provided and your safety equipment and a two person Bombardier four track (ATV) will be assigned. These ATVs are specially designed to safely and comfortably carry two people. Follow the guide through the specially maintained trails and marvel at the panoramic views of the ocean and the tropical forest. A stop will be made at a beautiful river for a refreshing beverage
and an optional quick dip in the cool water prior to returning to the ranch where your transportation back to the ship will be waiting.

El Yunque Rain Forest Drive

Get away from the city for a one-hour drive to the El Yunque Rain Forest--the only tropical rain forest in United States' territory, with tropical woodlands of giant ferns, wild orchids and crystalline waterfalls spread over hills and valleys. You'll stop briefly at La Coca Waterfall, the Natural Pool, the Tourist Recreation Center and the observation tower. At the Natural Pool, take a short stroll on a mostly paved pathway in the forest. Visit a handicrafts shop before the return trip to San Juan.

Bring a light jacket in case of rain.


Exotic Puerto Rico Latin Traditions Show

Enjoy a taste of Puerto Rico's heritage in all its spirit and color. In this high-energy, spicy variety show, a guitarist and four or five dancers perform modernized, slightly risqué versions of the mambo, samba, conga, flamenco and the seductive rumba.

This is the heart of the Puerto Rico countryside brimming with the flora and fauna of this lovely area. Horseback riding instruction and an orientation to the rental rules are provided. Guides accompany the group and riders of all levels are welcome.

NOTES:
From March to October there will be a 30-minute rest stop to relax or swim. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing and bring a towel. Weight limit is 220lbs.


Old San Juan Historic Walking Tour

Savor the distinctive Old World flavor of San Juan with a bus ride to San Felipe del Morro Fortress and Military Museum, a treasure on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Visit Ballajá Barracks and the Museum of the Americas--great examples of San Juan's Spanish heritage. Walk past Quincentennial Square and San José Church to visit the Dominican Convent. Your stroll will take you down Cristo Street and Caleta de las Monjasto La Rogativa Monument, the Cristo Chapel and San Juan Bautista Cathedral.

San Juan City Tour

Enjoy a drive through 17th-century architecture and along the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan to view fortresses from ages past. See the Cristo Chapel, the stately Governor's Mansion and San José Church. Tale a self-guided visit of San Cristobal Fortress, built in 1634 to protect San Juan Harbor, and continue to the Condado district filled with skyscrapers, high-rise condos and luxurious resorts. Stop in Old San Juan for shopping and from there you can make your own way back to the ship.

San Juan City Tour & Bacardi Distillery

Learn a little bit of history about this fascinating island and its famous sugar cane drink at Puerto Rico's impressive, 17,000-square-foot Casa Bacardi Visitor Center. The distillery boasts historic use of tiles depicted in murals, beautiful park-like grounds, a museum of the Bacardi family history and the Bacardi shop. Don't miss the fiber-optic multi-media presentation, antique furniture and documents dating back to 1859, the 1930s-style art deco bar and, of course, a taste of the final product! Next, enjoy a drive through Old San Juan to view 17th-century architecture in the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. Visit San Cristóbal Fortress, constructed in 1634 to protect the city. Continue to the Condado District, a modern area of high-rise condominiums and luxury resorts and back to the ship.


World Heritage Fortress & Art Museum

Old San Juan, the second oldest city in the Western Hemisphere, offers visitors a distinctive Old World flavor. Visit San Cristobal Fortress--a treasure on UNESCO's World Heritage List, and the Art Museum of Puerto Rico, offering exhibits from the 17th century to the present day.


San Juan Shore Excursions - Seabourn

CATAMARAN AND SNORKEL

An approximate 1-hour drive by motorcoach brings you to one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast of Puerto Rico. A delightful day of sun and fun is yours once you embark the cat, where snorkel gear and instruction are provided. During your outing, partake of refreshments including piña coladas, rum punch, mineral water, soft drinks and beer. As you work up an appetite from all the fresh air and sea, help yourself to the "build your own" sandwich buffet featuring assorted cold cuts and cheeses, along with a variety of toppings and condiments, pasta salad, tropical fruits and cookies. See different representations of how the rum is produced and the entire behind the scenes process at the Bacardi Visitors Center. The impressive distillery boasts beautiful park-like grounds, a unique museum depicting the Bacardi family history, and the Bacardi Shop, which you have the opportunity to visit. The tour of the distillery plant concludes at the Hospitality Pavilion, where complimentary refreshments are served for your pleasure. Then enjoy a drive through Old San Juan to view fortresses protected by massive stone walls from ages past. View examples of 17th-century architecture including the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. Highlighting this overview are the San Francisco Chapel, the Capitol Building, the San Juan City Hall, and the stately Governor's Mansion. HORSEBACK RIDING AT OCEAN TRAIL

A scenic 1-hour drive by motorcoach brings you to the Tropical Paradise ranch where the staff greets you and shows you around the ranch's facilities. Then you are introduced to the safety rules and given instructions on riding a horse. One of the guides is in charge of providing lessons on how to handle your horse and saddle care. Then it's time to saddle up! A ranch guide assists in adjusting your riding gear, and mounting your horse, and you are assured of feeling comfortable during the ride. A tour guide also accompanies the group to ensure that you have a most enjoyable and pleasant ride. So just relax, sit back, and take in the beauty of Puerto Rico by horseback!


MAGICAL EL YUNQUE

This superb excursion introduces you to a magical, tropical world of giant ferns, wild orchids, tangles of vines, and glistening waterfalls of crystal-clear purity. Begin with a pleasant drive along the main highway to El Yunque Rain Forest, the only tropical rain forest in the United States territory, and one of Puerto Rico's finest examples of natural beauty. Stops are made at Coca Falls, or the fountain of youth, the lookout tower, and the natural pool. Next arrive at the tourist recreation center, where you can ask park rangers questions about the flora and fauna of the forest. Pause for a short time at the center before setting off at your own pace on an independent walk along the trail into the forest. When you reach the end of this picturesque and interesting trail, return to the ship via the scenic Isla Verde coastal route.


MOUNTAIN BIKE TO SEA ADVENTURE

Depart the city by air-conditioned motorcoach and travel along the Atlantic Ocean coastline to the Piñones Area set between the mangroves and Laguna Piñones. Here, the staff greets you for the start of your mountain bike to sea adventure! Following a brief orientation on your bike and equipment, the first ten minutes is spent peddling along a beautiful boardwalk that carves its way through the largest mangrove forest left in Puerto Rico. Experience the sights and sounds of the forest stopping once along the way to receive commentary on the flora and the fauna of the area. On this portion of the ride, you may encounter many bird species, large reptiles such as tree iguanas, and an abundance of crab life. At the 15-minute mark, break free from the cool shade of the mangrove forest and find the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean and the warmth of the sun as the trail makes its turn to the coastal side. Continue to ride along the water's edge as the beautiful beaches and the crashing surf on the cliffs make for spectacular views. During your ride, a brief rest stop is made at a beautiful white sand beach.

Explore the Bioluminescence Bay, a real wonder of nature. Under the blanket of the night sky and the historical lighthouse of Fajardo, you can touch the waters glowing with bioluminescence organisms. There are only few places like this in the world and three of them are in Puerto Rico. Imagine yourself travelling across a mystical mangrove channel that leads to a peaceful place where the mangroves create natural tunnels and the sounds of wildlife surround you. Watch the stroke of each paddle light up a florescent green and encounter fish that look like shooting stars. BACARDI EVENING EXPERIENCE

Welcome to one of the exciting party ferry ride across the bay of Old San Juan. As you board the ferry you will hear and dance the Puerto Rican music as they drink one of the tropical drinks. As the ferry move across the bay you will enjoy the impressive view of the walls of San Juan. And the massive Mansion of the governor also part of San Felipe del Morro Castle. Ride continue to Cataño were you will be meet and transported to the Biggest Rum Distillery in the World. At the Bacardi you will enjoy the Exhibition also taste complementary drinks and you will have time for shopping at the Bacardi store. Bacardi Evening Experience

Experience the spirit and spirits of Bacardi, the largest rum factory in the world. 

On this excursion you will:

  • Board a ferry for a short ride across the harbor.
  • Take a shuttle bus to the Bacardi Rum Distillery, an approximate 15-minute drive.
  • Enjoy an interactive tour of the Bacardi facility as you learn the history of the product.
  • Browse the Bacardi gift shop and enjoy two complimentary drinks before you board your bus.
  • Make photo stops at the Capitol building and Fort San Cristobal on your return trip.
  • Have an optional drop off in Old San Juan for sightseeing on your own.

Bike Adventure

Mountain biking, swimming and beautiful scenery are the main ingredients in this first-class excursion.

On this excursion you will:

  • Take a 30-minute bus ride through the Isla Verde area and along the Northeast Coastline of tha Atlantic Ocean before arriving at the Pinones area.
  • Arrive at the Pinones Forest Visitors' Center for an orientation and pre-ride ability test to given there.
  • Be outfitted with a backpack containing water and supplies.
  • Start your ride on the boardwalk, carving through the mangrove forest.
  • Break free from the shade and head into the sun towards the coastal side.
  • Continue along the waters edge. Break at a beautiful white sand beach and enjoy the beach, water or do a little swimming.
  • During your return, cover terrain along the ocean not yet seen.

Notes: The total ride time is approximately 2 hours. Towels are NOT included.

This is a very active excursion and guests should be in good physical condition to participate, maximum weight limit - 225 lbs., minimum age 15 years.

Bottled water and light snacks will be provided.


Bioluminescence Bay Kayak Tour

Bioluminescence Bay is one of the few places in the world considered to be a wonder of nature.

On this excursion you will:

  • Take a 1-½ hour trip to Fajardo, as your guides provide a narrative of your surroundings.
  • Paddle across the mangrove channels of "Las Cabezas de San Juan" natural reserve.
  • Pass the Fajardo Light House under the enchanting blanket of the night sky.
  • Marvel at the water, rich in bioluminescent organisms.

Notes: Life jackets and refreshments will be provided.

Please note that there is a weight restriction of 400 lbs. (combined, 2 persons per kayak) and the minimum age requirement is 8 years old. Pregnant women are not permitted on this excursion.

Guests are discouraged from bringing non-waterproof cameras or any other items that they wish not to get wet. Don't forget your swimsuit & towel.

Full Moon Kayak Adventure

Let the light of the moon guide you as you explore the ecological aspects of San Juan. 

On this excursion you will:

  • Be transported to the small fishing village of Las Croabas for your orientation and safety training.
  • Learn from the informative narrative of your surroundings during the 1½-hour trip to Las Croabas.
  • Board a two-person kayak and be led across a small fisherman's cove to the entrance of Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve.
  • Paddle silently through the channel and listen to the sounds of the wildlife that inhabit this area.
  • Maneuver your way through the natural tunnels created by the mangroves to reach Laguna Grande.
  • Search for the beautiful Great White Heron before stopping for a break.
  • Quench your thirst and enjoy a light snack as you relax and admire the beautiful views of the rainforest and the Fajardo Lighthouse.
  • Board your kayak again for the 30-minute return trip to the departure site.

Note: This excursion is only offered as a substitute for the "Bioluminescence Bay Kayak" excursion when the moon is full. Minimum age is 6 years; maximum combined weight is 400 lbs.

Horseback Riding

The fascinating and unique El Yunque Rainforest is the setting for your horseback riding adventure.

On this excursion you will:

  • Take an approximate 1-hour ride to the beautiful Hacienda Carabali for a short orientation before the ride begins.
  • Ride gentle and spirited "Paso Fino" horses along the foothills of this world famous rainforest, you will get up close and personal with this wonder but you do not enter into the rainforest.
  • Venture into the heart of the Puerto Rican countryside.
  • Ride for 1 hour, winding along the edge of El Yunque and the banks of the Mamey River.

Note: Your total ride duration is approximately 2 hours including short rest stops.

Night Horseback Riding

Ride on horseback through the foothills of the rainforest, where only the stars in the sky and some friendly local fireflies light well-groomed trails.

On this guided excursion you will:

  • Take an approximate one-hour drive from San Juan to a local ranch in the rainforest.
  • Be introduced to your horse and participate in a short orientation.
  • Leave the ranch along trails that lead along the foothills of the rainforest.
  • Ride as trail dogs keep the horses on track and the guides keep you and your fellow riders spaced.
  • Appreciate the tranquility and peacefulness of nighttime of the rainforest, you will not be lead into the rainforest itself.
  • Stop by a campfire to roast marshmallows, have a cold drink and learn a little bit about the area from your guides.
  • Re-mount and head back to the ranch for the return trip to San Juan.

Note: Weather in the rainforest is unpredictable therefore a light jacket is recommended, insect repellant, sturdy closed toed shoes and long pants are also recommended.

  • Take in the amazing views of the San Juan Bay before walking through the Ballaja Barracks building.

Drive to the northeastern central area of the island and visit the only tropical rainforest in the United States territory, El Yunque.

  • Travel from old San Juan to new San Juan and enjoy a panoramic drive through the Condado, famous for hotels, casinos and restaurants.

San Juan Shore Excursions - Celebrity

Carabali Fourtracks ATV

Upon arrival, riders will be given a ten minute introduction on how to ride and operate a four track, including safety instructions. Then the real adventure begins as riders follow guides along outlined tracks through farmland into the rainforest. The tracks are carefully laid out for safety. The group will climb hills, negotiate tight corners, roam through rugged terrain, splash through the river water, and much, much more. Individual riders will take it all at their own speed and within their own capabilities. So, whether you are an experienced rider or a first time rider, you can be sure of an exhilarating ride. A tour highlight is the panoramic view from the Bamboo Lounge where riders can see miles of ocean and rainforest views. Note: Limited to 1 person per vehicle. Closed shoes and long trousers are recommended. Also suggest bringing cash, towels, bathing suits, and extra clothing to change into after the tour.


Carabali Horseback Riding Tour

Located in the town of Luquillo, a one hour and 15 minute bus ride from the pier, is the Hacienda Carabali. This Hacienda provides stables for the fine Paso Fino and well-trained horses which are carefully matched to each rider's ability. Upon arrival at the farm, you will be taught the safety points and the basics of horseback riding on the Puerto Rican Paso Fino horses. An experienced trail guide will lead you down the foothills of Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rain Forest, while you enjoy the incredible views and experience the stunning flora and fauna of this unique eco system. The fresh clear waters of the Mameyes River are perfect for cooling off, as you will have approximately one half hour to enjoy the stop. Don't forget your swimsuit if you plan to swim!Note: The horseback riding portion of the tour is 1 hour long. Long pants and enclosed shoes are recommended. This is a slow-paced, walking-only horseback ride. Guests must be at least 12 years of age and weigh less than 250 pounds in order to participate on this excursion. City Tour & Bacardi Rum Distillery

This tour takes you for a visit to view the massive ancient fortresses and the great stone walls that have protected the capital since the conquistadors built it in the 16th Century. A stop is made at the San Cristobal Fortress and here you have the opportunity to alight from the bus and explore the old fort at your leisure. This is an unaccompanied visit and guests should be aware that the walk into the fort includes a steep gradient. During the drive through the old city, you will see many restored buildings that give Old San Juan its Spanish colonial flavor. Afterwards, the tour continues to the world famous Bacardi Rum Distillery, where you will have the opportunity to learn about the San Juan history and the development of its unique sugar cane industry. You will enter the new Bacardi Amphitheater where you will see the complete history of the Bacardi family and the process of making rum. You will then visit the Bacardi museum where you will be able to smell the different kinds of Bacardi Rums and even sample the results. The tour will continue with a drive through the Condado and Isla Verde areas, where you can see the modern part of San Juan. For those participants finally disembarking, this tour terminates at the airport.

El Yunque Rain Forest Tour

A popular side trip out of San Juan is to El Yunque Rain Forest. During the 1 1/2 hour drive, you'll pass towns and rural communities en route to one of Puerto Rico's finest spots of natural beauty. El Yunque encompasses 28,000 acres and reaches an elevation of 3,526 feet, so it is pleasantly cool. The rain forest averages 200 inches of rainfall a year, making the tropical woodlands lush. Upon arrival at Bao Grande, a natural swimming pool, you will depart on a 25-minute walk on Camimitillo trail. Along the way you'll see the artificial nest of the Puerto Rican parrot, flora and fauna of the Palo Colorado forest, and other forest inhabitants. You will make a short stop at the interpretive station before re-boarding buses for a short ride to the Yohaku observation tower. You'll stop at Coca Waterfall, once believed to be the fountain of youth. Old & New San Juan City Tour

Experience both modern and colonial San Juan during this excursion. You will visit Fort San Cristobal, a 17th-century military fortification, the largest ever built by the Spanish. The Spaniards built San Cristobal and the city walls to defend San Juan from attack. You'll have time to explore the tunnels and other ingenious defenses. You'll also see historic landmarks such as the San Jose Church, the Governor's Mansion, the Cristo Chapel, El Convento Hotel and other historical areas. You'll also visit the Condado section of New San Juan, with its rows of modern condominiums and luxury hotels. A short bus ride to La Princesa Boulevard, were we will start our walking tour thru fountains and around the city wall. A spectacular walk around the San Juan Bay thru San Juan Gate. Photo break at la Rogativa Monument continuing our walk to San Felipe del Morro rotunda.. They will enjoy an amazing view of the San Juan Bay and continue walking thru the Ballaja Barracks Building, Quincentennial Square, and San Jose Square. After enjoying the great architecture of San Jose Church and its surroundings we will go down Cristos street thru the narrow cobblestones streets and balconies down to San Juan Bautista Cathedral and Cristo's Chapel.At the end of the walking tour passengers have the option to enjoy shopping at la Fortaleza and Cristo street or a short walk to the ship.

Opened in 2000, this Smithsonian Institute affiliate is an architectural gem housed in an historical neo-classic building with a modern state-of-the-art exhibition wing. Similarly, both the colonial and contemporary Puerto Rican artistic traditions are fully represented. Guests will enjoy a 45-minute guided tour of the contemporary collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, folk art and photography. They may then explore the 5-acre gardens containing over 100,000 plants showcasing Puerto Rican flora as well as 14 large scale commissioned sculptures or the Museums beautifully merchandised store.

The art continues in Pikayo, referred to by The New York Times as San Juans best eating place. And selected by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine as one of the 100 most exciting new restaurants in the world. Here, guests will be treated to a four-course Taste of Puerto Rico menu - - a culinary tour of the islands fare reinterpreted by proprietor, Chef Wilo Benet, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and the premier representative of the new generation of Puerto Rican chefs.

The Fortresses Walking Tour

Accompanied by your tour guide, you will take a short bus ride from the pier to San Cristobal Fortress located at the northeast rim of Old San Juan. You will visit the inside of this military fortification built in the 17th century. You will then continue your walk through San Sebastian Street and Norzagaray Street where you will enjoy the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and the influence of French and Spanish architecture of its private homes. You will walk by the Art and History Museum building with a short break at the Quincentennial Square. After enjoying this break you will continue on to the Castle of San Felipe del Morro for an inside visit of this amazing 5 acre fortification built during the 18th century. After visiting Fort San Felipe you will be escorted to Cristos Street where you can enjoy shopping or go back to the ship.
