Venice

Venice nicknamed the "city of canals" and La Serenissima, is the capital of the region of Veneto and of the province of Venice in Italy. Its population is 271,663 (census estimate January 1, 2004). The city is included, with Padua (Padova), in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area, population 1,600,000.

The city stretches across numerous small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; the historic city of Venice (Centro storico) inhabitants are around 62,000, while approximately 176,000 people live in Terraferma (literal firm land, it means the extra-lagoon areas) and 31,000 live in other islands of the lagoon.

The Venetian Republic was a major sea power and a staging area for the Crusades, as well as a very important centre of commerce (especially the spice trade) and art in the Renaissance.

Established more than 1,000 years ago by seafarers and Roman refugees, this magnificent city continues to be the heart of Italian culture as well as a mecca for hopeless romantics.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss
Probably the most famous site in Venice is St. Mark's Basilica. Built to enshrine St. Mark's body in the 9th century, it was rebuilt in the 11th century with a new, spectacular edifice. The interior is clad in wonderful mosaics and holds statues, icons and its famous horses, brought to St. Mark's after the 4th Crusade in 1204.

Other Fun Things to Do
Explore the Doge's Palace, the official residence of the Venetian ruler, founded in the 9th century. See its famous Bridge of Sighs, linking the palace to the state prisons.

Take a walking tour through the quaint cobblestone streets and across the endless Venetian bridges to discover the intimate details that make Venice so unique.

Enjoy a gondola ride through the canals as you relax and absorb the surroundings.

Get a Taste of Local Flavor
Italians rarely shop in supermarkets. Instead, most prefer specialty stores. You can buy cakes at the pasticceria, milk at the latteria, and pasta, ham and cheese at an alimentari. It's a fun and interesting way to shop, and you'll find that the food is always fresh and delicious.

Local Currency
The Euro (EUR), the currency of the European Union, is the official currency of Italy. Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate. When shopping, remember there is a Value-Added Tax added to most purchases.

Islands of Venice: Murano, Burano & Torcello

Today you will visit three of the Venetian Lagoon's 40 islands--Murano, Burano and Torcello. In 1291, when furnaces were banned from Venice as a fire precaution, the manufacturers of exquisite glassware were transferred to Murano. Glassware was one of the few Venetian exports and as such, the secrets of this skillful craft were tightly guarded. Glassmaking was considered a privileged occupation, and glass artisans were allowed to marry into the nobility. Today, the Murano products of blown-glass mirrors, chandeliers, goblets and intricate works of art are renowned worldwide. There will be time for a visit to one of the many workshops and for shopping. Burano is next. Brightly painted houses decorate this small and cheerful fishing village that is best known for its lacemaking. Admire these beautiful works that require hours of labor, and maybe even purchase some, if you like. On the island of Torcello, visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta--the oldest building of the Lagoon-and the Church of Santa Fosca, both in Byzantine--style.

A motor launch will take you to the Cannaregio Canal for a visit to the medieval Jewish Ghetto, the first in Europe. Along the canal, you will see St Mark's Square and the Doges' Palace, the Lido of Venice, St Peter's of Castello, and Fontamente Nuove before reaching the Ghetto. In 1516, all Jews in Venice were confined to the islet of Cannaregio. By day, Jews were allowed out of the Ghetto, but they had to wear identifying badges and caps. Nowadays, only a few Jewish families live in the Ghetto. However, the quarter has not lost its ethnic character. There are kosher food shops, a Jewish baker, a Jewish library and five synagogues. There is also a shop on the large Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, which sells glass rabbis and Hannukah lamps. You will visit two of the five synagogues and the Jewish Museum on your own. Upon completion of the tour, you may stay in town and return to the ship independently, or return directly to the ship via motor launch.

Venice Shore Excursions - Seabourn

ISLANDS OF VENICE

The Venetian lagoon is created by the estuaries of three rivers and separated from the Adriatic by a row of sand bars, and is approximately 32 miles long. Venice lies in the center of the lagoon along with some forty other islands, nearly half of which are deserted, while some serve as house market gardens or sanitariums. Your excursion by motor launch takes you to three of the best known, and begins by traveling down to the island of Murano. In 1291, furnaces were banned from Venice as a fire precaution, and the manufacture of exquisite glassware was transferred to Murano. During Murano's golden age in the 16th century the island supported some 37 glass factories and a population of 30,000. As one of the few Venetian exports, the secrets of glassware making were closely guarded. Although its production is no longer a mystery, Murano's products are still renowned for their elegant artistry. Witness the masters of this delicate craft at work while you tour a leading factory. Continue on to the island of Burano, a small and cheerful fishing village distinguished by beautifully painted houses and canal banks lined with fishing dories. In the 16th century, Burano was cited throughout Europe as producing the finest lace in the world. Amidst this picturesque setting is the 16th-century church of San Martino and its curiously tilted campanile. Your last stop is the peaceful island of Torcello, formerly the most populous of the early lagoon communities. Traces of Torcello's former grandeur are evident in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its 7th-century altar and magnificent mosaic of The Last Judgment. Your tour concludes as the motor launch returns you to the pier.

ROMANTIC CANALS BY GONDOLA

Since Venice's foundation, there have always been gondoliers. By the 11th century most were in private service with patrician families. There were about 10,000 gondoliers in Venice in the 16th century, and today there are fewer than 400. Great skill is required to steer this unique boat through the narrow canals of Venice. Each gondola is 36 feet long, 4 feet wide and weighs 1,100 pounds. A gondolier serves a 10-year apprenticeship under a padrone before getting his own permit. A licensee must be native-born and, since new licenses are not issued, must wait until a colleague gives up a license before getting his own. Their union offers free courses in foreign languages, art history and the history of Venice, but the gondoliers are not given singing lessons - every Italian seems to have a natural talent for song. Join us for a romantic tour through the canals of Venice. Riding four per gondola, be serenaded as you gently traverse the smaller, less trafficked canals, enjoying the soft lights and balconied waterfront homes along the way.

UNFORGETTABLE VENETIAN VILLAS

Depart the ship by motorcoach for a scenic drive along the Riviera del Brenta, which links Venice with the provincial capital of Padua. When Venice conquered the mainland in the 15th century, Venetian patricians cleared the land along the river and built farms and lovely villas. They intended to strengthen the agricultural economy and to enjoy country life with easy access to the city. During the 15th - 18th centuries the riverbanks filled with sprawling villas displaying stunning architecture. Visit the dreamlike "La Malcontenta," built by Palladio, the greatest European architect of the 16th century, for the Foscari family. This masterpiece of rusticated stone lined with three orders of relief overlooks the river. Inside, the Greek Cross floor plan is illuminated by a single large window. Next, approach "Widman Foscari," built in the 18th century in French rococo style. The 18th century was an intense period when writers, poets and painters gravitated to the area and sought to capture its beauty in their works. The villa was home for a time to Lord Byron. Pause to enjoy a refreshment before continuing on to Stra for a visit of the beautiful villa "Pisani." Built to celebrate the election of Alvise Pisani as Doge, this superb villa recalls in concept the magnificent Versailles. Designed by Preti, the villa has an austere rectangular block shape with two courtyards separated by a central section with an enormous ballroom on the upper floor. Following your tour, reboard the motorcoach for the return drive back to the ship along the canal.

VENICE AND THE MOVIES

Take in the sites of famous movies with this delightful excursion by private boat. See Venice through the eyes of the cinema, which brings movies to life. On this guided fun and entertaining tour, you are taken to locations made famous by unforgettable movies including "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." San Barnaba is the area where the portion of this movie was filmed when Indy's search for the Holy Grail brings him to Venice. It is here that he finds a clue in the Church of San Barnaba, located in the Dorsoduro district. This same area is where Katherine Hepburn fell into the canal in David Lean's "Summer Madness." Not far from here is the mask shop where Stanley Kubrik chose the masks for his last movie, "Eyes Wide Shut." Next is a visit of the places where the newly released "Casanova" was filmed. Your excursion then continues on for a visit of the Excelsior Hotel where the stars stay during the annual film festival. Pause here for a refreshment in the elegant ambience of this famous hotel. This enchanting experience concludes with your return transfer to the pier.

VENICE'S GRAND CANAL AND MURANO TREASURES

Depart the ship by a small motorlaunch chartered exclusively for Seabourn to take you sightseeing on the Grand Canal and on to Murano Island. Listen as your guide brings alive the history and significance of the canal's elegant structures while you admire the beauty of the churches, palaces and bridges that line its banks. This is not only the best, but the only way to see the highlights as most tour boats are not allowed to travel the canal. Cruise in front of the Island of St. George, the ancient arsenal, and the Church of San Michele as you approach the island of Murano. In 1291, when furnaces were banned from Venice as a fire precaution, the manufacture of exquisite glassware was transferred to Murano. During Murano's golden age in the 16th century, the island supported some 37 glass factories and a population of 30,000. Glassware was one of the few Venetian exports so its secrets were closely guarded. Although its production is no longer a mystery, Murano's products are still renowned for their elegant artistry. Witness the masters of this delicate craft at work and take time to browse or purchase their remarkable treasures before returning to the ship. Along the way back to the ship, make a stop at a coffee bar for a glass of prosecco wine with snacks.

Scenic Cruise of the Grand Canal

Beyond what the pedestrians see and hidden from the standard sightseeing brochures, the best way to capture the pulse of the city is aboard exclusive water taxis.

On this educational excursion you will:

  • View the Grand Canal as it sweeps through the heart of Venice, following the course of an ancient river bed.
  • Discover that since the founding days of the empire, it has served as the city's main thoroughfare. Once used by great galleys or trading vessels making their stately way to the Rialto, today it is teeming with vaporetti, launches, barges and gondolas.
  • View the glimpses of its glorious past, however, that are never far away. The parade of palaces bordering the winding waterway, built over a span of around 500 years, presents some of the finest architecture of the Republic.
  • Learn historically, it is like a roll call of the old Venetian aristocracy, with almost every palazzo bearing the name of a once-grand family. Bright frescoes may have faded, precious marbles worn, and foundations frayed with the tides, but the Grand Canal is still, to quote Charles VIII, "the most beautiful street in the world".
  • See the area around the Rialto bridge is the oldest and busiest quarter of the city. Traditionally a center of trade, crowded quaysides and colorful food markets still border the canal south of the bridge.
  • Sail down the famous "La Volta" (The Bend), with its splendid curve that was long ago established as the finishing stretch for the annual Regatta Storica. The southern stretch of the canal, widening after the Accademia, is lined by a rich and varied parade of palaces.
  • View near the mouth rises the magnificent church of La Salute with busy St. Mark's basin beyond. With the wonderful view of St. Mark's basin, the journey starts its way back through the Giudecca canal toward the ship.

NOTE: No wheelchairs can be admitted. For operational reasons, the tour order may be reversed.

Secret Venice Walking Tour

Leaving the ship by motor launch, reach Piazzale Roma, where you will meet your guide to begin the walking tour. Proceed to Campo San Rocco, to view the church of Saint Roch and the "Scuola Grande di San Rocco," one of the great charitable institutions of Renaissance Venice, and, a few steps ahead, the Franciscan Friars church "Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari." Next is "Campo San Polo," one of the oldest and largest squares in Venice that in ancient times was a staging area for ceremonies, bull-running and theatrical performances. Silence reigns as you leave the busier thoroughfares and cross the "Corte del Milion," where Marco Polo's family lived to reach the "Campo San Giovanni e Paolo." After St. Mark's Square, it's one of the city's most monumental squares in Venice. There, you will have a chance to visit independently the church dedicated to the Saints John and Paul, the largest and most ambitious example of Gothic architecture in Venice. A refreshment stop will be made in this square so you can enjoy a complimentary coffee and sample a local Venetian biscuit. Your local guide will leave you at this venue.
