Built in 1099 over the Roman tombs of the Domitii family, the church was originally a simple chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The artist Raphael later earned a few extra ducats by building the Cappella Chigi, considered by the Illuminati to be the first altar of science. Admire the famous statues of Habakkuk and Bernini's The Angle, pointing the way down the Path of Illumination.

A GLIMPSE INTO ETRUSCAN HISTORY
Archaeology lovers are sure to delight in this glimpse into the history and life of the once-powerful Etruscans, a ruling class of sailor warriors whose ancient land, Etruria, once dominated Italy from the Arno River to the Tiber. While Rome was still a shepherd's trading post, the Etruscans reigned in a federation of 12 city-states. From the 8th to the 4th century BC, Tarquinia ranked as one of the most important of these, thanks to its powerful fleet. Enjoy the spectacular views to the sea as you drive toward Tarquinia, a sprawling city overlooking the sea known for its Old Town with quaint squares and lovely palaces. Leave your coach at the gate to the Old Town, the location of the elegant 15th-century Palazzo Vitelleschi that houses the National Museum. Its collection of Etruscan artifacts, taken from the nearby tombs and from other sites in the area, is one of Italy's most important. Besides pottery, gold jewelry, magical mirrors, and sarcophagi, its prized possessions are two winged horses that once adorned a 4th-century BC temple. Several reconstructed tombs are decorated with wall paintings that were removed from the actual site for safekeeping. Free time follows your visit to enjoy the ambience of the quaint Old Town before you rejoin the coach for the short ride to the huge underground necropolis. The Etruscan Necropolis covers nearly 2½ miles of rough terrain near where the ancient Etruscan city once stood. Thousands of tombs have been discovered here dating from the 6th to 1st centuries BC. About 200 tombs have been excavated but it is believed that the surrounding fields contain hundreds more still untouched by archaeologists or grave robbers. Many of the excavated tombs are decorated with bright funeral wall paintings that have helped historians fill in the gaps of the Tarquina story with insights into the culture, art and religious life of Etruscans.
ITALIAN COUNTRY EXPLORATION
This delightful alternative to Rome is for those guests who would prefer to enjoy a leisurely day exploring the pleasant scenery of vineyards, hills, valleys and lakes - a visit to the "Castelli Romani" district. This name was given to a section of the Alban Hills, which lie southeast of Rome. While anarchy reigned in Rome, the noble families sought refuge in the outlying villages, which they fortified against attack. Each of these villages was strategically set on the outer rim of an immense crater, itself pitted with small secondary craters, some of which now contain lakes. Pastures and chestnut groves blanket the upper slopes, while olive groves and vineyards known for producing fine wines cover the valleys. Pass through the village of Castelgandolfo to view the palace that the Pope uses as his summer residence. See the charming little town of Nemi, perched on a hill overlooking a lake of the same name, that is famous for its wild strawberries. From Nemi, proceed to a local country restaurant to sample the excellent wine of the region, along with a light lunch. Departing the restaurant, drive to Frascati, pleasantly situated on the slopes facing Rome, and famous for both its wines and 16th- and 17th-century villas. A stop is made here to sample the delicious "gelato," or ice cream, a specialty of this area, before commencing the return drive to the ship.
ROME TRANSFER
This is the ideal option for those who would like to explore the rich city of Rome entirely on their own. A convenient motorcoach transfer has been arranged with an English speaking escort to provide you with valuable information and to answer your questions en route. The motorcoach departs shortly after the ship's arrival, and arrives in Rome after approximately 1½ hours. The drop off and pickup point in Rome is on Viale Washington, near the Piazza del Popolo. Please return to the pickup point 15 minutes prior to departure, as the coach is not permitted to wait. Reflect on your wonderful day exploring Rome as you relax on the scenic return drive to the ship.
THE IMPERIAL CITY AND ROMAN HIGHLIGHTS
Thrill to the excitement and beauty of the "Imperial City" as you take in some of her most renowned sites, including the Colloseum looming over the ancient city. This symbol of Rome's eternity was completed in 80 AD and is the grandest and most celebrated of all the city's monuments. It has been said that when the Colloseum falls, Rome will fall - and the world will follow. Your day begins with an approximate 90-minute motorcoach drive to Rome, where you first stop to view this enormous arena that once sat 80,000 spectators to watch gladiators in combat, Christians pitted against lions, and even monumental naval battles. Reboarding your coach, a short ride takes you to Trevi Fountain - toss a coin in the fountain to assure your return to the Eternal City before continuing on your walk to the marvelous Navona Square with its magnificent Fountain of Four Rivers by Bernini. Enjoy a pleasant break from your walking tour and savor the local Italian cuisine during lunch at a nearby restaurant. Following lunch, your walking tour resumes to take in the Pantheon, where two kings, and the great artists, Raphael and Carracci are buried. Finally, pass through the Spanish Steps area on the way to rejoin your coach for the return trip to the ship.
THE WORLD FAMOUS VATICAN CITY AND MUSEUMS
This once in a lifetime experience begins with an approximate 90-minute motorcoach drive to Rome and your destination - Vatican City and entrance into the world famous Vatican Museums. A sovereign state within the Italian Republic, the Vatican has been completely independent since 1929. In fact, it has its own radio station, newspaper, stamps, currency, railroad station and diplomatic representation. Not only is the Vatican a rich spiritual center, it is also rich in priceless treasures. Over 1,000 rooms and galleries known collectively as the Vatican Museums, contain amazing treasures of art collected by the Popes over the centuries. Highlights include the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel with its world-famous frescoed ceiling, and Michelangelo's dramatic masterpiece, "The Last Judgment." A short walk takes you to a lovely Roman restaurant for a 3-course lunch complete with wine and coffee. Your afternoon begins with the return to Vatican City to visit S. Peter's Basilica and splendid Bernini Square, which is surrounded by marble columns and statues of Saints and Popes. Entering the basilica, the largest church in the world, you are sure to marvel at this masterpiece of art, which was built on the grave of St. Peter and houses Michelangelo's first and best known masterpiece, the "Pieta." Reboard your coach for the scenic drive back to port, reflecting on this glorious day along the way.

A full day at our disposal to discover what Rome has to offer to the tourist. Our experience will start at the port where we will find the Roma Express waiting for us. This train is exclusively for the cruise passengers and will allow us to reach Rome, the eternal city, avoiding the traffic while also making this journey more interesting. On arrival at the station of Roma San Pietro, your guide will be waiting to take you by coach to the Vatican Museums, one of the world most important collections of ancient and Renaissance art, result of the patronage and passion for art of several Pontifs. The top moment of our tour will be the visit to the Cappella Sistina, with frescos by Perugino, Botticelli and Michelangelo (the vault and the Universal Judgement). At the end of the visit, there will be two hours free time for lunch, shopping or discovering the treasures of Rome. In the afternoon, we'll be guided through the splendour of the Vatican City marvel at the beauty of St Peter Square, surrounded by Bernini arcades, the Basilica and the birthplace of Christianity, built on St Peter burial place. The construction of the Basilica started in 1452 and lasted more than two centuries. Some of the most important masters of the Renaissance worked on it: Bramante, Michelangelo, Raffaello and Bernini. We will admire the "Pieta'" of Michelangelo, the Baldachin of Bernini in the High Altar lying just under the Dome (one of the biggest in the world and one of the masterpieces of Michelangelo).

The Borghese Country House hosts the Museum (ground floor) and the Borghese Gallery (first floor). The building, desi. gned by Flaminio Ponzio in 1608, was completed in 1617 by Giovanni Vasanzio. Throughout the following 200 years, such Renaissance masters as Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini worked on its design and created an unparalleled masterpiece.
