London Panoramic Drive

London's fascination is its variety - old and new stand side by side - history, pageantry and tradition mix with the modern, eccentric and avant-garde, offering something for everyone.

YOUR SCENIC DRIVE
Taking a circular itinerary around the capital, you will see Westminster, Whitehall and the St. James' section of London. Crossing Westminster Bridge, pass by the Neo-Gothic Parliament buildings and the adjacent 320-foot (98 m) clock tower of Big Ben. Standing adjacent is the architectural masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries - Westminster Abbey. Entering Whitehall, pass the end of Downing Street and the Cenotaph War Memorial and past Horse Guards' Parade. Travel along The Mall, the broad triumphal approach to Buckingham Palace lined on one side by St. James' Park. See St. James' Palace - still the Court's official headquarters, and Clarence House - London home of Prince Charles and the Princes William and Harry. Your panoramic drive travels by Admiralty Arch to Trafalgar Square - location of Nelson's Column - a 165-foot (60 m) column commemorating Nelson's victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Trafalgar. The Square is flanked on one side by the National Art Gallery, whilst on another side stands the elegant church of St Martin in the Fields. Three famous streets, Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly, can be found in the West End and at their hub is Piccadilly Circus and its famous statue of Eros. You will see Park Lane bordered by prestigious hotels and the green expanse of Hyde Park which stretches up to the triumphal Marble Arch.

Royal Windsor

Windsor is steeped in regal history; its famous Castle was originally built as a fortress by William the Conqueror and affords views across to Eton and Runnymede - scene of King John's signing of Magna Carta.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Windsor Castle - Enter England's largest castle through the Henry VIII Gateway. Beyond is the immense courtyard of Lower Ward - flanked by St. George's Chapel - leading to the Round Tower. The State Apartments have painted ceilings, paneled walls, Adam fireplaces, classic furniture and priceless paintings. This magnificent suite of ceremonial rooms are used by the Queen to entertain visiting Heads of State. One of the most beautiful religious buildings in England, St. George's Chapel was begun in 1475 by King Edward IV and took 51 years to complete.

SHOPPING AND INDEPENDENT SIGHTSEEING
Free time is allowed to explore the main part of Windsor town, which came of age around the Castle in the Middle Ages. There are quaint Georgian shops, houses and inns, however, the most prominent building on the High Street is the Guildhall completed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1689.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Travel by motorway route northwards from Southampton towards Windsor. From a distance, the Castle can be seen rising above the River Thames and the charming town which surrounds it. Following your visit to Windsor Castle, appreciate a panoramic drive through the town of Eton, passing the famous Public School before rejoining the motorway for the return trip to Southampton.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection. There is a moderate amount of walking required to visit the various parts of Windsor Castle. Windsor can close without notice for Royal functions.

Stonehenge & Salisbury

Stonehenge is Europe's most famous prehistoric monument, whereas Salisbury, with the lofty spire of its cathedral commanding attention for miles around, is always thought of as a medieval city.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Stonehenge - Stonehenge remains as compelling today as it was to the people who built the first phase over 5,000 years ago. Walk through the short tunnel and onto the field site; the stones are fenced off for protection but your guide will accompany you along the encircling pathway for close up views, and will describe what has been concluded from observations and archaeological evidence about the builders, their beliefs, tools and methods.

Salisbury - Walk with your guide through the town center to view the charming 13th-century cathedral that enshrines 700 years of English history. See the fine buildings within Cathedral Close which compliment the beauty of the cathedral, and the black-and-white half timbered houses of the nearby streets.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Travel past Southampton Water heading towards the open countryside viewing rural landscapes divided by hedgerows and onto Woodford Valley - home to peaceful villages with thatched, stonework cottages sheltering in the lee of protecting slopes. The narrow road winds along the valley following almost every twist and turn of the west bank of the River Avon. As you travel towards Stonehenge, view meadows with lines of willow trees that complement the picture-postcard English countryside scenes. After visiting Stonehenge, you will travel the short distance to Salisbury.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.

Winchester & Shopping

If one place lies at the centre of English history and embodies the romantic vision of an English heartland, it is Winchester - a beautiful cathedral city surrounded by meadows and rolling chalk down land.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Winchester Cathedral - The current building, begun in 1079 in the Romanesque style is at the heart of a diocese which once stretched from the Thames to the Channel Islands. Considered to be one of the world's great buildings, your visit enables you to experience sacred architecture and art as well as an introduction to an important facet of English history. Evensong still takes place daily in the choir of the Cathedral, and you will view the choir stalls with their magnificent gabled canopies, elaborately carved with flowers and plants, owls and monkeys, dragons, knights and green men.

Winchester - Explore the centre of this ancient and royal city, which still resounds to the echoes of its famous history. You may also pay an independent visit to the finest of all 13th century halls, with the greatest symbol of medieval mythology - The Round Table of King Arthur. The celebrated Round Table hangs in King Henry VIII's Great Hall at the Castle, also where Walter Raleigh was tried and sentenced to death.

SHOPPING
The city's compact friendly streets are perfect for browsing and exploring - amidst scenic settings there is a tempting array of shops, boutiques and galleries together with department stores.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.

Historic Ships

Visit the home of Britain's Royal Navy for nearly 500 years, and see Henry VIII's Mary Rose, plus Vice Admiral Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Mary Rose - After 437 years under water, the Mary Rose commanded world attention during her spectacular raising in 1982. Her discovery was enormously important in archaeological terms, for not only was the ship itself remarkably preserved in the silts of the Solent, so were her weapons, along with the everyday tools and possessions of the men who sailed her.

HMS Victory - Vice Admiral Nelson's cabin where he died during the Battle of Trafalgar, together with the somber gun decks where his men lived and fought are all visible. But the Victory is more than just a preserved warship; it is the flagship of the Commander-in-Chief, Naval Home Command and is manned by officers and ratings of the Royal Navy.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
From Southampton, drive via the motorway route to Portsmouth. Entering Victory Gate is like entering a time capsule; all around are splendid buildings put up to support the great sailing fleets of the 18th and early 19th centuries, storehouses, boat houses, ropewalks and the gracious residences of the naval and dockyard senior officers.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.

English Countryside & Corfe Castle

One of Britain's most majestic and romantic ruins, medieval Corfe Castle dominates a breach in the Purbeck hills where marble was once quarried for the rest of England.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Corfe Castle - Follow in the footsteps of kings, knights, soldiers, workmen, servants, prisoners - the multitude of people who have lived at, worked in, fought over or visited Corfe Castle during its 1,000 year history. Today, Corfe Castle enjoys its position in the quiet village where from the time when dinosaurs roamed the area, right up to the modern day, nearly all periods of history are celebrated in and around the village - unequalled in the U.K.

SHOPPING
Following your castle visit, a short time is allowed to wander around the village of Corfe.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Travel across the delightful countryside of Dorset County to the village of Corfe.

SPECIAL NOTES
Motorcoaches park in the village of Corfe; it is then an uphill walk, to the castle. While in the castle, there are some fairly steep gradients. Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.

Beaulieu Palace & Motor Museum

Beaulieu, nestling on the bank of the Beaulieu River, is where King John gave the area to the Cistercians in 1202 - at the head of the Beaulieu River they built an abbey, at the time, the largest in the country.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Palace House - A stately home built on the ruins of the abbey gateway in the 16th century, Palace House has been the family home of the Montagu family since 1538. With its warm and friendly atmosphere, the house offers an insight into the past with many fascinating family treasures, portraits and photographs.

Beaulieu Abbey - Although much of the lovely 13th-century abbey was destroyed during the reign of Henry VIII, you will still appreciate its timeless beauty and tranquil atmosphere. One of the remaining abbey buildings now houses a monastic exhibition which illustrates the daily life of the Cistercian Monks. The Cloisters of the Abbey - with arches evoking its heyday - have been planted with aromatic herbs to recreate an herb garden of monastic times.

National Motor Museum - See some of the earliest examples of motoring from the 1890s through to legendary world record breakers. Bringing back memories of a bygone era walk through a 1930s street scene to see the shops, vehicles and tradesmen of the period.

YOUR SCENIC JOURNEY
Travel across heath land and through parts of the wooded New Forest, a 145 square mile nature reserve that was originally designated a hunting reserve by William the Conqueror in 1079. Small herds of freely roaming ponies and donkeys are a feature of the open heath. Riverside Beaulieu provides a perfect foreground to the historic and mellow palace buildings beyond. Leaving Beaulieu, continue across more heath land to picturesque Lyndhurst - a much admired and photographed village of garden fringed, thatched cottages - and through parts of the New Forest before returning towards Southampton.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.

Travel tip: Beaulieu is pronounced "bew-lee"

Exbury Gardens & New Forest Drive

Gardeners and lovers of natural beauty will marvel at both the New Forest's ancient and ornamental woods along with Exbury Gardens - considered the most outstanding of their kind in southern England.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Exbury Gardens - Historically, the gardens go back to the 1920s, when they were created by Lionel de Rothschild; they are now run by his descendants who wish to share this wonderful creation with you. Winding paths meander over 200 acres and proceed under a light canopy of trees - mostly oak and pine - over a bridge and beside ponds to the Beaulieu River. Renowned for its rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas you may also see the maturation of exotic species, brought back by explorers of earlier days.

YOUR NEW FOREST SCENIC DRIVE
Following your visit to the Exbury, continue through the New Forest - the largest area of woodland in England. Originally, established in 1079 as a hunting reserve by William the Conqueror, the beautifully wooded district of the New Forest - a national nature reserve - now comprises 145 square miles of undulating forest and heath.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.

Historical Wilton House

Buildings have stood on the site of Wilton House since the 9th century - experience years of history as you view magnificent rooms and see the top secret Operations Room for Southern Command where logistical support for the D-Day Landings in 1944 was planned.

YOUR WILTON HOUSE TOUR
In the Old Riding School, view an introductory film - Noblesse Oblige - an entertaining look into the lives of the Earls of Pembroke. Entering the Front Hall, admire a fine statue of William Shakespeare before continuing up the Gothic staircase to the Upper Gothic Cloisters. Next, see the Gothic Hall, housing the Coronation Robes last worn by the 15th Earl and Countess at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II .Entering the Large Smoking Room, view bookcases made by Thomas Chippendale around 1750. The ornate Colonnade Room was designed as the bedchamber for the King or visiting head of state. The Double Cube Room is probably the finest surviving room in England from the mid 17th century. Designed by Inigo Jones as the central feature of his suite of State Rooms, it has been visited by virtually every British monarch since Charles I.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Situated just outside of the city of Salisbury, is historical Wilton House - an approximately one hour ride will take you west to one of the Treasure Houses of England.

SPECIAL NOTES
Dress in comfortable layered clothing, wear walking shoes and bring along rain protection.
