A MEDIEVAL TUSCAN TOWN AND CHIANTI REGION
A fascinating alternative to Florence is a day spent in the enchanting town of San Gimignano and the sun-baked vineyards of the Chianti region. Your morning begins with a pleasant drive through the vine-clad hills and wheat fields of Tuscany. As you approach the little town set on a hill, the distinctive skyline boasting thirteen towers comes into view. San Gimignano, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Tuscany, seems bathed in a buttery light, its old towers and crenellated walls casting long shadows across the landscape. Walk with your guide to the Piazza della Cisterna, named after the well at its center, and ringed by unspoiled 13th and 14th-century "palazzi." At the Piazza del Duomo, visit the majestic 12th-century Romanesque Church. After this enjoyable walking tour, stop at a local winery shop to sample some of the finest wines of the Tuscan tradition. Free time follows to enjoy lunch on your own, and browse the Via San Giovanni and Via San Matteo, where you find a multitude of small shops offering a wide range of local handicrafts, food, wines and antiques. Reboard your coach in the early afternoon for the return drive to Livorno and your ship.
DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF TUSCANY IN LUCCA
Experience the delights of a charming medieval town during this leisurely excursion. Drive through the lovely Tuscan countryside to the city of Lucca, birthplace of the composer Puccini. Lucca is enclosed by massive red brick walls, which give the city a special character and effectively remove it from the bustle of the modern world. Built between 1504 and 1645, the walls are among the best preserved defenses in Renaissance Europe. Inside, Lucca is a peaceful city of narrow roads and medieval houses, which keep to the original Roman plans. Your walking tour allows you to admire the Cathedral of San Martino with its richly adorned Romanesque facade. Walk along the Via Fililungo, little Lucca's version of Via Veneto in Rome, where lovely shops line the street. Visit Piazza Mercato, which occupies the site of the ancient Roman theater, and is surrounded by fascinating medieval houses built against the wall of the amphitheater. Enjoy free time for browsing on your own before rejoining your coach for the return drive to Livorno.
FLORENCE - BIRTHPLACE OF THE RENAISSANCE
Florence, or Firenze, is a feast for both the senses and the intellect. Even if you didn't know that Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance, it would be easy to guess as few cities are imbued with such a magnificent sense of harmony, grace, dignity and serenity. Immediately upon arrival in port, motorcoaches are waiting pierside to transport you through the breathtaking Tuscan countryside to Florence, the nerve-center of the Renaissance. First visit the Academy Gallery to view its collection of works by Michelangelo, one that gives the visitor some idea of the artist's extraordinary personality and the conflict he faced between his raw materials and his idealistic vision. Of particular interest is the monumental figure of David, a symbol of youthful force and a perfect example of the sculptor's humanism. Proceed to the city's cathedral, the Duomo, which is surmounted by Brunelleschi's gigantic dome. Construction began in 1420, and it is said that up to 10,000 Florentines could be accommodated for the sermons of Savonarola. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a typical Florentine restaurant before making your final stop in Holy Cross Square, where you receive a brief introduction to the Santa Croce Church. The splendid interior of this church is a jigsaw puzzle of marble tombs, and contains chapels frescoed by Giotto, and Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel, small in scale but huge in its impact on the history of design. The tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini all lie within. Spend the remainder of the afternoon at your leisure before meeting back at Holy Cross Square to commence the return drive to Livorno and your ship. Traffic permitting, make a stop en route to take in the panoramic view from Piazzale Michelangelo.
FLORENCE BY BIKE - TRANSFER ADD-ON
Bicycling is a delightful way to explore this wonderful town. On arrival in Florence, you are dropped off near the bike rental location, where once fitted with equipment, you are off for a biking tour that takes you through the San Lorenzo Central Market. Proceed to the Cathedral of Santa Mara del Fiore, with a stop outside for an explanation of the building. Other areas you travel past are from Via Roma to Piazza della Repubblica, Via Calmala to the famous Straw Market, toward the Ponte Vecchio, Lungarno M.L. de Medici and to the Uffizi Square. Continue through the Borgo dei Greci to reach the famous Santa Croce Square. On the return leg back to your starting point, peddle through Via dell'Anguillara, Piazza San Firenze, Piazza della Signoria, Via Calzaiuoli, and many medieval streets before ending at San Lorenzo Square. Once bikes are returned, the remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy lunch and explore further on your own before meeting up with the return transfer to the ship in the afternoon.
FLORENCE CITY TRANSFER
For those guests who prefer to explore the exciting city of Florence on their own, a transfer by motorcoach has been arranged to take you to and return you from the city. Arriving in Florence after an approximate 1½-hour drive, your English-speaking escort walks with you to Piazza Santa Croce, where a meeting time and place are pointed out for you to rejoin the group later in the day. Enjoy your time at leisure, meeting back at the scheduled departure time and place where your guide joins you for the walk back to your waiting coach, and the return drive to Livorno. For interested guests there is an opportunity to visit the renowned artistic stationery workshop, "Il Papiro." There is no additional charge for this 1-1½-hour visit in which you learn all about this ancient craft. To reserve your space for Il Papiro, simply advise the tour office of your interest at the time you purchase this transfer.
SIENA SOJOURN
Enjoy a relaxing 2-hour drive through the picturesque Tuscan countryside to Siena. True to the traditional pattern of settlement in Tuscany, Siena sits atop a hill. Enclosed by high walls, Siena is a vision - the exact color that all of us know from our first box of crayons. Approach the walls as travelers have through the ages, and be drawn into the labyrinth of narrow streets that snake through the fabric of this fabled city. Second only to Florence for artistic heritage within Tuscany, Siena retains a medieval rather than Renaissance feel. Visit the heart of the city, the Piazza del Campo, a unique fan shaped area with the monumental Fonte Gaia and Gothic Town Hall as its centerpieces. The piazza is transformed into a racetrack twice each summer when the Palio is run here - a traditional bareback race that dates back to 1310. Continue on to the duomo, a church unlike any other, and built over a 200-year period to exalt not only the religion but also the city. A chronicle of the artists and political history of Siena, the church boasts rich treasures including marble inlaid floors that depict 56 stories from the Bible. Midday, a delicious lunch of regional specialties is served at a local restaurant. Some free time follows to explore further on your own or browse the shops before commencing the return to the ship in Livorno.
THE TREASURES OF PISA REVEALED
Journey to Pisa, the site of the famous leaning tower. This historic university city on the Arno was already an important naval base in Roman times, and by the 11th century, Pisa rivaled Genoa, Amalfi and Venice as a maritime power. Pisa's trade with Africa brought the Arab scientific and artistic influences to Italy, which can be seen within the architecture of the city. Debarking your motorcoach in Pisa, head straight to Piazza del Duomo, also known as the "Field of Miracles." Begin your tour at the 900-year-old marble cathedral with its distinctive striped black and white Romanesque architecture that suggests the Moslem influence. Within the cathedral are ancient columns on both sides of the nave and a richly gilded Renaissance coffered ceiling. The pulpit was designed by Pisano and is decorated with scenes from the New Testament. The beautiful bronze lamp is said to have given Galileo the idea of the pendulum as it swung back and forth. The marble-clad circular Baptistery is also unusual, with its combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The baptismal font here is large enough for full immersion. Move on to the main attraction, the unmistakable campanile known as Pisa's Leaning Tower. The marshy ground beneath the foundation could not support the weight of the tower, which began tilting as builders reached the fourth floor. Despite numerous plans and sometimes bizarre schemes, the tower continued to lean a little more each year and was recently some 16 feet out of plumb. The results of the current extensive corrective efforts becomes apparent during your visit. Galileo used the tower for his famous experiments with falling objects. Enjoy some free time to browse before rejoining your motorcoach for the return drive to Livorno.
