Athens (Piraeus)

Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the most famous cities in the world, named after goddess Athena. Modern Athens is a bustling cosmopolitan metropolis, with a population of 3.7 million people. The Athens metropolitan area is currently growing both northwards and eastwards across Attica and it constitutes the dominant center of economic, financial, industrial, cultural and political life in Greece as well as in the Balkans today. The city is also rapidly becoming a leading business center in Europe. Athens is located at 38°00′N 23°43′E.

Ancient Athens was a powerful city-state and a renowned center of learning, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. It is considered to have been the cradle of Western civilization, largely due to the immense impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European Continent. The heritage of the Athenian Enlightenment is still evident in the city, portrayed through a number of spectacular ancient monuments and artworks, the most famous of all being the Parthenon on the Acropolis ("high city"), nurtured by Ictinus, Callicrates and Phidias. The latter is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Classical Greek architecture, still standing as an epic legacy to the West and indeed to the rest of the world. Many of these cultural landmarks were renovated ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games.

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

Other Fun Things to Do
Visit Plaka, the old neighborhood of Athens. Explore the narrow streets and alleys, single-story houses, neoclassical villas, taverns and many tourist shops.

Experience the traditional flea market of Monastiraki, the neighborhood next to Plaka.

Explore the National Archaeological Museum, home to a formidable collection of the world's antiquities.

Pay a visit to ancient Agora, ancient site of the religious and political heart of Athens.

Ancient Corinth & Canal

Visit the famous Corinth Canal which is four miles long, 70 feet wide and has sloping sides 170 feet in height. It connects the Ionian and Aegean seas to provide a shortcut. Your next stop will be Ancient Corinth. The ruins that lie in this area are a surprising mix of an ancient 6th-century BC Greek city and a 44 BC Roman city--the latter was built after Julius Caesar placed a colony on the desolate site. See the ruins and excavations of both, including a Christian Basilica, the starting lines of a Greek racetrack, a sacred spring with its bronze lion's-head spouts and the elaborate Roman fountain of Peirene.

Athens & The Acropolis

No one introduced Athens to the world as elegantly as Milton did--"Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence." Your visit today will begin with the most famous temple of the Ancient City--the Parthenon, dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. Walking up a winding path towards the Acropolis, you will pass through the Propylaea, and see the Erechtheum temple and the Porch of the Caryatids in the distance. Reinforced by the hand of man, the natural fortress of the Acropolis stands 230 feet above the city. You cannot help but be in awe of the view below. On a drive through the city, some of the highlights include Constitution Square, the Royal Palace where the Evzones keep watch in their traditional costumes, the Temple of Zeus and the Olympic Stadium.

NOTES:
This tour involves a considerable amount of walking with an uphill climb to the Parthenon. The marble steps are slippery, especially when it rains. Comfortable, rubber-soled shoes are highly recommended. Sunscreen and a hat are also recommended, as shade is limited. Expect dense crowding at this site.

From the Herodion Theatre, admire a magnificent view of the Acropolis. The Benaki Museum has recently undergone thorough modernization and has been extended with the addition of a new wing. Athens, the Acropolis & Cape Sounion

Begin your tour with a drive past marinas and resort towns to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, built in the 5th century BC. The temple's location, 180 feet above the sea, affords a magnificent view of the blue Aegean and distant islands. Many cruise ships passing Sounion today still pay their respects to Poseidon by lowering the ensign, blasting the ship's whistle, and pouring a libation over the side of the ship. On your way to Athens, you will stop at a leading hotel for lunch, then continue to the natural fortress of the Acropolis which rises from the city. Its symbolic ruins have survived for 25 centuries and have remained a part of the Greek culture for the entire world to appreciate. Pass Hadrian's Arch, indicating the border between the Greek and the Roman cities in Ancient times. You will pass the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which took 700 years to complete, Constitution Square, the Presidential Palace and the all-marble Olympic stadium built in 1896.

NOTES:
This tour involves a considerable amount of walking. Expect crowding and congestion at the Acropolis.

This tour includes a meal--lunch on daytime tours, or dinner on evening tours.

The remains of ancient Athens constitute one of the brightest jewels of the Mediterranean--a city that stood for more than 25 centuries. You will pass Adrian's Arch, the statue of Lord Byron, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which took 700 years to complete. Continuing on towards Constitution Square, view the former Royal Palace where the Evzones National Guard keep watch in their traditional costume over the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. See the all-marble Olympic Stadium built for the modern Olympic Games in 1896. Pass by the National Gardens and drive along University Street, whose numerous neo-Classical buildings include the University and the Library.

A photo stop will be made at the foot of the Acropolis. Shopping time is allowed at the end of the tour.

SOUVENIR FROM THE ACROPOLIS

Athens, the cradle of western civilisation and the capital city of Greece, is a tourist destination of exceptional interest. Athens owes a good part of its fame to the majestic complex of the Acropolis. In spite of the destruction it suffered throughout the centuries, the monuments found on top still reflect the splendour of the Age of Pericles, a time when the city was the spiritual, artistic and political centre of the country. You will see the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Virgin, built in 447/438 B.C. under the management of Phidias, the Erechtheum, with the extremely famous porch of the Caryatides and the Propylaea, which spirals to "crown the citadel of the gods like a magnificent tiara," and finally, the Temple of Zeus, the largest temple in ancient Greece, dedicated to the father of the gods. The excursion ends with a scenic visit to the modern city and a stop at a souvenir shop.

Designed for the guests who would like a more leisurely visit to Athens. Your city drive will take you from Piraeus into Athens covering the main points of interest both ancient and modern as your guide provides interesting commentary.

First stop will be in the pedestrian zone of the Acropolis where your guide will provide a short explanation on the Acropolis and Parthenon (exterior visit only). From a scenic viewpoint, you will be able to photograph the famous Acropolis, which stands in the distance on a rocky hill high above Athens. Reboard your coach for an orientation drive of Athens from the comfort of your coach. See Hadrian's Arch, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Constitution Square, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Parliament, the Academy, the University and the National Library. At the termination of the orientation drive, you will arrive at the most suitable point for entering the Plaka. Proceed with your guide on a short walking tour of Athens's oldest and most picturesque neighborhood. The maze of cobblestone pedestrian streets is lined with shops, boutiques, souvenir stands, and flea market stalls. You will have approximately 1.5 hours to browse through the many shops and souvenir stalls or you can relax in one of the many tavernas or cafés. Meet your guide at the designated point and time to rejoin your coach for your return drive to the ship.

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 1 mile over steep inclines, steps and uneven surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes, hat and plenty of sunscreen are recommended. Walking during free time in the Plaka is at guests' discretion. Due to new regulations, buses may be required to park some distance from the archaeological site and this may involve additional walking. If guests should miss the return coach, transportation back to the vessel is their own responsibility and at their own expense. This tour will operate with an afternoon departure only.

Ancient Corinth & Canal Cruise

Leaving Piraeus, drive along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf to the famous Corinth Canal. An unforgettable sight, the Canal is 4 miles long and 72 feet wide and was built with sloping sides, which reach a height of approximately 230 feet. The depth of the water in the canal is approximately 24 feet. Although many attempted to construct a canal in this location, success was not found until the 19th century. Admire the spectacular view of the canal from a bridge more than 200 feet above the water before reaching the Isthmia pier, the entrance to the Canal where you will join a boat for a cruise along the canal. During the cruise, local mezes and snacks will be served. After the cruise, disembark at Isthmia pier and continue to Ancient Corinth, one of the most important towns in antiquity. Corinth, built at the foot of the famous Acrocorinthos Hill (altitude 575 meters), served as a mighty acropolis or citadel in times of mythology. This ancient city not only led the way for Athens and the wider territory of Greece but for the entire Mediterranean world. The renowned Corinthian capital, which still adorns public buildings around the world, had its origins there (Callimachus, 5th century BC). The long and extremely interesting history of this city includes the time of St. Paul (50 AD), who visited the city twice and founded the Church of Corinth. The featured venues on this tour are the Apollo Temple, Fountain of Glauka, Spring of Periander, and the remains of the beautifully paved 25-foot wide Lechaion Road.

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 1 mile over varying terrain, inclines and numerous steps. Comfortable walking shoes, a hat and plenty of sunscreen are recommended. The canal boat has an uppper deck for guests wishing to enjoy the sun during the cruise. The drive from Piraeus to Corinth is approximately 1.25 hours each way, dependent upon traffic conditions. Please be aware that ongoing restorations work is often carried out at the listed venues. On this tour you will not see, pass by or visit the famous "Acropolis of Athens."

Athens & Cape Sounion With Lunch

Your tour begins with the highlights of Athens and the legendary Acropolis built during the Golden Age of Pericles. Explore the ruins of this ancient city and admire its crowning glory, the Parthenon. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant serving traditional Greek food.

After lunch and a short drive, reach the southernmost tip of the European landmass, Cape Sounion. High on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea stands this imposing temple dedicated to the god of the sea, the Temple of Poseidon. The 16 Doric columns bear silent testimony to the tragedy of King Aegeus who threw himself to his death. You will pass the gate and climb a rocky path, roughly following the ancient approach into the sanctuary of the sea god. The temple was probably designed just after the middle of the 5th century BC and the remaining columns of Pentelic marble have retained much of their original lustrous white appearance.

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 2 miles over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, steep inclines and 100 to 200 steps. The entrance of the Acropolis requires uphill walking with steps and uneven surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes, a hat and plenty of sunscreen are recommended. Guests should be aware that large bags, backpacks and oversized purses are not permitted inside the Acropolis archeological sites of Acropolis and Sounion so please plan accordingly. The total amount of driving involved during this tour is approximately 3.5 hours (Piraeus - Athens - Sounion - Piraeus), dependent upon traffic conditions. Please be aware that ongoing restorations work is often carried out at the listed venues. Tour order may vary in order to avoid congestion.
