Skagway

Skagway is a city in Skagway-Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Alaska, on the Alaska Panhandle. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 862. The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the city's business. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months.

Skagway (originally spelled Skaguay) is from the Tlingit name for the area, "Skagua." The name has several meanings, "the place where the north wind blows," "stiffly wind-rippled water," etc.

Skagway & The Dangerous Days Of '98

Step back in time and soak in Skagway's colorful history from the sites you visit and the characters you meet on this entertaining tour.

During the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, Skagway was reputedly home to the largest gang of criminals in North America. Their leader was the notorious gentleman crime boss Jefferson Randolph “Soapy” Smith. Relive the exciting days of saloons and dance halls, shoot-outs and lynch mobs, floozies and Can Can girls. Witness the final events leading up to the dramatic demise of the villain that Skagway loves to hate, Soapy Smith.

Climb aboard a comfortable motorcoach and travel through the downtown historic district, seeing Skagway much as it looked during the gold rush. Then, head to The Lookout, a photographer's delight, for a panoramic view of the Skagway Valley, glacier-clad mountains, Lynn Canal and your cruise ship. Next, visit the Trail of ‘98 Museum's unusual artifacts — hard evidence of the stories you see and hear on your tour.

Finally, see The Days of ‘98 Show, the longest running production in Alaska. This show has it all: singing and dancing, love and rejection, comedy and drama, and truly brings Skagway's colorful history to life! After the performance, stay in town and explore on your own or return to the cruise ship pier.

Then you're set free in the Liarsville gold fields and are guaranteed to find that precious metal that drove men and women wild with gold fever. Once you've made your fortune, wander through the camp and visit the general store, bordello and laundry tents to view the antiques and vintage clothing left behind by miners and ladies of the evening. Alaska Nature & Wildlife Expedition

Renowned naturalists, magnificent wildlife and breathtaking photo opportunities await you on a motorcoach journey through the “Valley of the Eagles.”

Nestled between rugged glaciers and snow-capped mountains, the fertile Chilkoot Valley is home to generations of brown bears, bald eagles, mountain goats, river otter and salmon. Inquisitive visitors, bird watchers and photographers are fascinated by the profusion of migratory and resident birds. Powerful spotting scopes afford close-range views of mountain goats in alpine meadows, bears along the river and nesting eagles.

Colorful harlequin ducks, marbled murrelets, loons, surf scoters, seals, sea lions, porpoise and whales are other seasonal highlights. Experience the living tapestry within the rain forest during a refreshing walk beneath magnificent trees and through ancient muskeg. Relax during a tasty, picnic-style lunch before returning to Skagway. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the wildlife of Haines.

In August and September, when spawning salmon offer a greater chance to spot bears, we take advantage of the long Alaska twilight on a later departure of this tour called: Evening Wildlife Expedition. On this departure, naturalists take you to the sheltered valley of the Chilkoot River, for centuries a favorite fishing site for the Tlingit people and brown bears. As the sun slowly sets, bears descend on the river, leaving the cover of the forest to forage along the grassy banks. Spotting scopes bring the action up close. From the protection of your bus, see the food chain in action as thousands of salmon swim past hungry bruins. This unique evening wildlife viewing opportunity has limited capacity and includes a delicious picnic-style dinner on the cruise back to Skagway.
